Busting Out of The Comfort Zone

by Shae Bynes

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” ~Brian Tracy

I was pretty nervous….there were hundreds of faces out in the audience at the Design Center of the Americas.  I started to feel grateful that I wasn’t wearing my glasses because that way the faces would mostly be a blur when I walked out onto the runway…..

…wearing some rather high heels (for me anyway)

…sporting a serious new hairstyle (one I never would’ve chosen for myself)

…wearing fake eyelashes (say what?!?)

…and blue eye shadow.

I watched all of these absolutely gorgeous ladies struttin’ their stuff as I nervously awaited my turn. I said a prayer and banished that ugly picture that showed up in my head of me tripping in those heels in front of everyone.  I said out loud to myself (repeatedly), “I can do this.  It will be great.  I’ll walk with confidence.  I’ll flash my killer smile. I’ll be so happy that I did this.”

Then the emcee called my name and I came out from behind the curtain….I was slightly wobbly, but I was feeling ok.  I couldn’t see any faces other than those in the front row, but my loving hubby was standing up and cheering somewhere in the middle of the audience.

So I did my thing.  I worked that catwalk the best way I knew how…and you know what?

I was so happy I did it.

This was one of those instances in life when I simply allowed myself to be forced way outside of my comfort zone. I didn’t ask to be a part of the Divine Design Fashion Show….I was invited to go through a mini-transformation and to be honest I didn’t want to do it.

I’m actually not uncomfortable being in front of large groups of people…

…but on a runway?  With a complete different look?  In high heels?

Totally out of my element.

But the reason I said yes is because even though I didn’t like the idea, I knew that – like Brian Tracy said – any opportunity to bust out of my comfort zone would help me to grow.

Who knew that a fashion show could make a difference?

But it has.

Now, it’s off to the next challenge.  Disney’s Expedition Everest Challenge on May 8 which will be the most physically challenging thing I’ve done in my adult life.  Well, perhaps other than giving birth to my oldest daughter, but God is so good and has helped me to forget how very challenging that was.   LOL!

I’m sharing all of this just to serve as a reminder that busting out of your comfort zone is a good….no a great…thing.  It’s probably not big hair, fake eyelashes, high heels, and blue eye shadow for you….but it’s something else.  Whatever it is, I encourage you to embrace it.  It just might change your life.

Girl…you are so very right! I don’t know what it would be for me, but I am sure with this encouragement, I would gladly embrace it and grow thereby. Thanks for sharing, Shannon.

Seyi, I’ll tell ya what….I’m not sure which dreams and goals you’ve written down, but I can assure you that as you’re faithfully taking action on them, God will place some rather “out of the box” type of opportunities in your path that will stretch you a bit.

  2. It’s often very painful to step that far outside our our comfort zone. But, it’s so worth it (when it’s over). You know what they say …feel the fear and do it anyway!

Thanks Stephanie! I’m glad you found it useful. The best way to get unstuck is to do SOMETHING….calling some leads is an excellent place to start :-)

Really great post, Shae! I like to think of a comfort zone as building an invisible fence around ourselves against anything challenging. In order to learn, grow and change we need to push through the fence and break it down! Well done for doing just that! Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you, Karmen! :-) Keep working at it…like anything else, it just takes repetition….I think making a habit of living outside of your comfort zone maximizes success in the long run.

I struggle with this on a daily basis, but I know that this is what I have to do to grow. Right now I’m distracting myself from the calls I need to make to grow my business. Bye gotta go make some calls. Thanks for the inspiration !

    Hey Shae -
I have this thing where whenever something scares me in a good way I know I have to do it. I immediately sign up to do it or make a plan to do it. Not scary in a bad way like walking in a creepy alley late at night … but if something comes up and I am scared to do it I think “all right here we go …. ”

I am a stronger, more confident and more interesting person, I believe, because I do what scares me. You are too – it’s one of the million things I love about you.

You looked gorgeous. I love your hair like that …

And I love that Phil was there front and centre cheering like a crazy man. You guys rock.

Thanks Jules! I love that attitude! I’m probably not as quick to embrace the scary things as you are, but I’m (almost) always willing to put myself out there….however, there are a couple roller coasters that people have dared me to go on that I wouldn’t touch….. :-)

Shae, You look so beautiful! I know it is so hard for me to get out of my confort zone. Since I work at home now I hate to even get dressed to go out to show property even. So congradulations!
